Course Description
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge to operate a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) in excluded sub-2 kg category operations. It includes operating within the relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
This unit addresses flight planning, pre-flight inspection, operating an RPAS during normal flight, managing an RPAS during abnormal or emergency procedures and landing.
The unit is applicable to personnel who pilot Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) in excluded category sub-2 kg operations in visual line of sight (VLOS). They may work individually or under supervision as part of a team. Authorisation to perform this role is subject to organisational policies and procedures.
Excluded category operators are still required to obtain necessary CASA approvals.
Course Cost
$495.00 consisting of 2 parts
Part A - $245.00 50% online leaning materials 90 days to complete
Part B - $245.00 50% for the face to face assessment component and issue of the certificate
Overview
The course is delivered in two parts
Part 1- Access to the LMS (Learning Management System) is provided, you then get access to the course and 90 days to complete - see "LMS Course Modules" below
Part 2- Go to our web site to book into the Assessments (face to face process), Locations will be over Australia and a minimum of 6 to a maximum of 12 on each day
The Day practical component of the course will run approximately:
8am to 9.30am - Course Introduction, recap on knowledge, log books/paperwork and inspections (pre and post)
30 mins morning tea
10am - 12 noon - Practice flying (Log book hours)
1 hour lunch
1pm - 3pm - Flying and assessments (Log Book hours)
3pm - 3.30pm - Final completion, paperwork, pics Q&A etc

Volume of Learning
It is deemed to require 1 to 3 months to complete, a learner group accessing this qualification would reduce the amount of training depending on their experience and skill levels demonstrated during the Direct Assessment process. The training delivery includes a combination of self-paced and distance learning with mentoring support.
Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification, although it is expected that candidates will be those with current experience and/or licenses for operating drones in their workplace. Advantages given if you can show or currently be involved in workplaces that currently work in the Drone Industry.
LMS - Course Modules
- Enrolment
To continue into the Skill Set (Nationally Recognised Training) you must be officially enrolled into the course, this section explains the process and once the forms are completed filled out and accepted you are good to continue
- CASA Excluded Category - Introduction
Excluded RPA are drones that can be used for activities that are not sport or recreation. These include commercial or professional activities (i.e. hire and reward) for work, research, training, or community services. Common areas of these activities include photography and film making, media, university research, real estate, surf lifesaving, construction and trade.
- Public Liability Insurance
From an insurance and risk perspective, there are risks from the operation of Drones. Hazards include both damage or loss and injury. The most significant are damage to the aircraft itself and injury to the operator or innocent Third Parties.
- Plan Flight
Flight requirements are identified, Relevant CASA approved apps are consulted, Permission is obtained from relevant stakeholders prior to operations, Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and risk controls are implemented, Awareness of current and forecast weather conditions is maintained, Effects of wind velocity, adverse environmental conditions and contingency actions are planned for
- Pre Flight Inspection
Inspections carried out in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, Pre-operating inspection is recorded where applicable and in accordance with organisational requirements
- Getting CASA Operator Accreditation
When operating a micro RPA or excluded RPA, you must be accredited. If you already hold a RePL, you do not need to obtain RPA operator accreditation. Accreditation is free and is valid for three years.
- Take off and climb RPAS
Take off is conducted appropriate to RPAS type, with allowance for environmental conditions, Pre-departure control inputs are verified, RPAS maintained and aligned in the departure direction, CASA Standard Operating Conditions for operating a RPAS are followed, RPAS climb is conducted in accordance with operational requirement, RPAS performance is monitored, Airspace awareness is consistently maintained
- Control RPAS in flight
Power, altitude and configuration are set to achieve stable flight, Indications of height change are identified and responded to, to appropriately maintain safe operation, RPAS operating limits are maintained in accordance with manufacturers' instructions, Flight path is observed and risks are managed in accordance with operational requirement
- Mange RPAS in abnormal or emergency situation
Abnormal or emergency situations are identified and communicated to relevant personnel, Appropriate abnormal or emergency action is decided and implemented
- Descend and Land RPAS
Appropriate inputs are made to altitude and power to achieve required descent rate, Flight path is observed during descent and risks managed in accordance with requirements, Landing is conducted appropriate to RPAS type, with allowance for environmental conditions, Control of RPAS is maintained for safe landing, RPAS is powered down according to RPAS type
- Complete Post Flight Inspection
Flight time recording requirements are accurately transcribed, After landing checks are performed in accordance with approved checklist or manufacturer's instructions or operational requirements, Post flight paperwork is completed and submitted as required

Final Knowledge Exam to prove previous lessons learnt
- Practical Exam
Practical activities to prove knowledge has been retained in relation to Basic Drone Operations
- Issue of National Recognised Training - Skill Set
Assessment
Assessment information will be provided to you at the start of the course by your trainer and you must abide by the assessment requirements set by Locating Unlimited Pty Ltd and your trainers. Your coursework will be returned with feedback from your trainer. Please allow adequate time for the assessment process before making an inquiry on progress. All assessment activities will be carried in part 2 of the course at our hands on day.
All learners with Locating Unlimited Pty Ltd are offered the opportunity for recognition of prior learning (RPL). If you believe that you have the pre-existing skills, knowledge and experience for all or part of this course, please contact our head office and request an RPL Guide. This will need to be filled out, with relevant documentation and returned to head office who will forward this on to your trainer for assessment.
